The European countries show a common “very broad” unity that Ukraine’s security in the long term is based on a strong military ability.
The words come from France’s Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu after a meeting in Paris with several colleagues – a meeting where no fixed decisions were made, but collaborations were strengthened, he says.
The ministers therefore judge the idea that Ukraine should be demilitarized after a peace agreement with Russia has been reached.
– The word demilitarization begins to emerge, but that is not the case. On the contrary, the true guarantee of lasting security is the ability we can give the Ukrainian military, says Lecornu at a press conference after the meeting.
The ministers say they agree that the security situation has changed after Donald Trump’s entry into the White House in the United States, but that it can also strengthen the European Community.
“We accelerate our work,” says Britain’s John Healey and flags for a coalition under construction.
– In the next few weeks you will see European allies approaching more and more.
Germany’s Boris Pistorius fills in:
– I am convinced that if we act now, and choose Europe’s security before small details on national interests, we will be strengthened from this situation.
