Version 14.5 of Apple’s mobile operating system has been available since April 26, with its share of new features. You can install it manually if you don’t want to wait for the automatic update.
A few days after its major spring conference, Apple published version 14.5 of iOS, its operating system for iPhone, and its iPados 14.5 declination for iPad. Contrary to what its numbering could suggest, this intermediate version is not content to correct bugs and improve some functions: it has an amazing lot of new products which make it particularly interesting not to say essential, especially for fans of the brand. And if it should set up automatically via the automatic system update function, you can also make the installation manually if you can’t wait to take advantage of it. Provided you have a compatible model, of course.
What are the main news of iOS 14.5?
In addition to the traditional corrections of bugs and safety faults, iOS 14.5 provides a number of various improvements and, above all, new functions, some in connection with the latest ads from Apple.
Limitation of advertising data collection. iOS 14.5 introduces the App TransParency (ATT), a new mechanism allowing any iPhone or iPad user to refuse advertising follow -up by third parties via applications or on the web. Thus, each launch of an application, a pop-up window opens to ask the user to collect their navigation data and other information. It is the great novelty that has been causing a lot of ink for months, by generating reluctance and controversies – especially Facebook. All applications are subject to ATT, those of Apple included. Those who refuse to adopt this new transparency system will be withdrawn from the App Store.
Unlocking with Apple Watch. Wearing the mask making it delicate the use of the ID front – Apple facial recognition identification – during this pandemic period, Apple has provided a rescue solution. Thus, owners of an Apple Watch can use their connected watch to unlock their iPhone. The Apple Watch just has to be nearby, on the wrist and unlocked. You can then unlock the iPhone without risk, keeping its mask by simply looking at the camera, the Apple Watch captivating a haptic return indicating that the iPhone is unlocked. This new function is only compatible with the iPhone X – and subsequent models -, and the Apple Watch Series 3 – and subsequent models. For safety, it is not usable, however, to pay purchase via Apple Pay or on the App Store.
- New voices for Siri. IOS 14.5 brings new more natural voices to Siri, Apple’s intelligent vocal assistant. Above all, no voice is no longer defined by default. It is up to you to choose, to the configuration of the iPhone or iPad, if you prefer a female voice – the default option until then – or a male voice. A way for Apple to avoid criticism of sexism and to assert “A commitment to diversity and inclusion”. Siri is enriched with the passage of new functions, such as FaceTime in a group, to call several people at a time, the announcement of incoming calls in addition to the messages received – with AirPods or Compatible Beats products -, and people to contact in an emergency.
Geolocation of AirTag and other Bluetooth tags. iOS 14.5 obviously supports Airtag, the famous Apple portable tag, which allows you to easily follow and find important objects (keys, wallets, bags, etc.) via the location, confidentially and securely locating by anonymizing location data using end -to -end encryption.
- New emojis. Apple is no exception to fashion and iOS 14.5 introduces many new emojis, with some 200 variations of humans or couples in order to offer many more “inclusive” options and to reflect greater diversity. On the menu, an exhaust face, face with spiral eyes, face in the clouds, hearts on fire, healing heart and bearded woman, etc.
iOS 14.5 still brings other new features and improvements of various interests. Let us point out the arrival of a new battery calibration function for iPhone 11 – all models – promising an optimization of autonomy and a better lifespan. Or the possibility of reporting live an incident or an accident on the road in the plans application-in the United States and China for the moment-, by voice, without letting go of the steering wheel via Apple because-it is even possible to report the presence of radars, but this function will never be activated in France. In the field of video games, iOS 14.5 knows how to manage the DualSense joystick of the PS 5 and the controllers of the Xbox Series X and S, which will allow you to take advantage of the services like the PS Remote or the brand new Xbox Cloud Gaming. On the telephony side, thanks to iOS 14.5, the iPhone 12 will now be able to manage two different 5G networks in dual SIM – so far, this mode has been limited to 4G – which will allow you to use two 5G lines on the same device. And in the musical register, iOS 14.5 will allow Siri to be configured to choose a favorite streaming music service. Nothing revolutionary, therefore, but a host of small improvements that will please aficionados.

Version 14.5 of iOS and iPados is only compatible with the following models. You will not be able to take advantage of it if your iPhone or iPad is too old.

If your iPhone or iPad is compatible, you can benefit from version 14.5 of iOS and iPados. In principle, it is downloaded and sets up on its own when it is available if the automatic update function is activated on your device. This is the solution to favor, for safety. But the deployment being progressive, you may have to wait several days before taking advantage of it. If you are impatient, you can already make the update manually.
