Versatile athlete Juhani Salmenkyla is dead

Juhani Salmenkylä won Jukola’s message seven times and developed Iltarasti. In basketball, he won several Finnish championships and served as the Finnish team leader in Tokyo in 1964.

A versatile athlete Juhani Salmenkylä is dead. Salmenkylä died this morning at the age of 90. The matter was confirmed to Sport by her daughter Leena Salmenkylä-Mattila.

As an orienteer, Salmenkylä won Jukola’s message to the Helsinki Orienteering team seven times, with which he shares the record. He also won two World Championship silver and one European Championship gold post.

Salmenkylä developed his brother Matin with the Evening Crosses familiar to thousands of fitness orienteers in 1977.

As a basketball player, Salmenkylä won several Finnish championships. He was the team leader of the Finnish basketball team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and was also the referee at the Games. From 1969 to 1972, he was the chairman of the Finnish Basketball Association. In 2015, he was appointed to the Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame.

Salmenkylä was a lawyer and deputy judge.
