Venezuela’s opposition leader arrived at the demonstration | News in brief

Opposition leader María Corina Machado has been in hiding since the disputed presidential election.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado arrived today at a demonstration by thousands of opposition supporters in the country’s capital, Caracas.

Machado has been in hiding since the disputed July 28 presidential election saying he was afraid for his life.

A sitting left-wing president Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of the election, but the election result has been widely doubted. Among other things, the United States has recognized the opposition leader as the winner Edmundo González Urrutia.

Along with Machado, several leading figures of the opposition came to the demonstration, but not Urrutia.
