Venezuelan intelligence service cars blockade the Argentine embassy News

Venezuela has claimed, without evidence, that opposition representatives hiding in the Argentine embassy have planned, among other things, the assassination of President Nicolás Maduro.

Armored cars from the Venezuelan intelligence service have surrounded the Argentine embassy in the capital, Caracas. The situation has continued since Friday.

Several representatives of the opposition have been hiding in the official residence of the Argentine ambassador and sought asylum there after the presidential elections in the summer. The integrity of the election result has been widely disputed both within the country and abroad, for example in Argentina.

In revenge, the president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro cut off diplomatic relations with the Argentine president Javier Milein right-wing government. As a result, Brazil has represented Argentina’s diplomatic interests in Venezuela and protected asylum seekers.

On Saturday, the Venezuelan government announced that Brazil can no longer represent Argentina’s diplomatic interests in the country. According to Venezuela, the decision entered into force immediately.

Venezuela has claimed, without evidence, that opposition representatives hiding in the Argentine embassy have planned terrorist acts and, among other things, the assassination of Maduro.

A week ago, a human rights organization that monitors Venezuela’s prison system reported that more than 700 people arrested during the post-presidential election demonstrations have been transferred to the country’s highest-security prisons.
