Earthquakes are sometimes felt in the beach resort popular with Finns, but the effects are often mild.
The vibrations of the devastating earthquake that happened in the eastern parts of Turkey on Monday morning were felt even in the beach town of Alanya, which is also popular with Finns.
Living in Alanya Brother Matti Kuusinen tells over the phone that he felt the earthquake when he was on his feet at five in the morning.
– It was such a very, very slight tremor and vibration. Nothing rattled or rattled. Surely no one here has woken up to that, even if they have been sound asleep.
Alanya is about 450 kilometers away from the center of the earthquake as the crow flies.
– You did notice that the ground was shaking, but it didn’t scare you in any way.
According to Kuusinen, earthquakes have been felt in Alanya before, but they have mostly been very mild, just like now.
Kuusinen has not heard of any damage in Alanya.
– Alanya is a tourist area, the houses here are certainly better built than there in the east. It’s cold and snowy there and a really sad situation. Not to be envied.
Also lives in Alanya Sari Syrjälä tells that he heard from his friends that they had woken up in the morning to the shaking of the bed. Syrjälä himself lives in the mountains outside the city, where the earthquake was not felt at all.
– Closer to the shore, it blows more. As a rule, hotels are in that area.
According to Syrjälä, there have been times when clearly stronger earthquakes have been felt in Alanya, the center of which has been across the sea in the direction of Cyprus.
He says that he spoke with his Turkish colleagues about the matter on Monday morning. The mood has been upset.
– Probably everyone has relatives in that area. I just heard that an acquaintance’s house was still standing this morning, but the aftershocks had knocked it down as well.
However, Syrjälä has strong faith in the Turkish rescue authorities and aid organizations that are currently working in the earthquake areas.
– If some people know how to act well in a crisis situation, then the Turks.
