Vegeta is never seen as Super Saiyan 3 in Dragon Ball Z

In the Dragon Ball Z anime, there are only two characters who use Super Saiyan 3. Son Goku and Gotenks get a boost in strength and a long, blonde mane during the transformation. But Vegeta, the proud prince of the Saiyans, never reaches SSJ3 in the anime. The mangaka Akira Toriyama explained in an interview why this is.

Why did Vegeta never reach SSJ3? Son Goku has already explained that Super Saiyan 3 costs too much energy and should therefore only be used in worlds where time stands still. In the worst case, the fighter could become exhausted and would be at a disadvantage in longer fights.

That’s why hardly any Saiyans use the SSJ3 in battle on Earth. He would exhaust the fighters before they had even defeated their opponent.

But there is another reason that goes beyond the manga and is more economic in nature. The anime’s production team, Toei Animation, would have asked Toriyama not to use Super Saiyan 3 a third time (via Jeux Video).

Drawing the voluminous hairstyle would take too much time and money. Toriyama’s time was also limited due to the tough deadlines of his manga, which is why he skipped filling in the blonde Super Saiyan hairstyle. The lack of time and money meant that Vegeta was never able to achieve SSJ3 in the anime.

Could Vegeta theoretically use the SSJ3? In the anime itself, Vegeta only used the SSJ2, the precursor to the SSJ3. Whether he would have been able to use this stage was never clarified in the manga.

Vegeta may have already known that Super Saiyan 3 requires too much energy and therefore decided never to use it. Alternatively, it could be that Vegeta simply wasn’t strong enough to use it at that point.

In Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta would definitely be able to use the SSJ3. There he can transform into much stronger forms such as Super Saiyan Blue. This level probably costs less Ki than SSJ3, which is why Vegeta chooses Super Saiyan Blue rather than Super Saiyan 3 in Dragon Ball Super.

What is the Super Saiyan 3? This transformation is the first stage in which the Saiyan’s appearance changes drastically:

  • At this level, the Saiyans get a huge head of blonde hair. That’s why they lose their eyebrows.
  • In return, the eyebrow area stands out slightly and the look becomes darker than usual. This makes the final design stand out from its original design.
  • The SSJ3 can only be achieved by those who have previously achieved the SSJ and SSJ2. They also have to go through years of training.
  • The SSJ3 was rarely seen, and only the Saiyan power appeared even more rarely. In addition to Son Goku, there were only Gotenks, the fusion of Son Goten and Trunks, who used the stage. Son Goku himself explains the reason for the rare use in manga chapter 476.

Son Goku’s son has now reached an even stronger form. In the manga he reveals the secret behind his Beast Mode: Dragon Ball: Son Gohan reveals the secret behind his strongest form, competing directly with Son Goku
