“I have also been on the ferry very often next to Gijs and the old pont boss Evert Hoolwerf,” says Alex. Hoolwerf retired last year after almost thirty years. Out of curiosity, Alex has often watched the skippers’ shoulders. Yet driving the ferry is getting used to, he says. Especially the calm mooring is a small challenge: “Then you have to get rid of your gas on time and give it back a clappie.” The valve sometimes goes up instead of down or vice versa, but that doesn’t press the fun for him. He is enthusiastic and is shining with a big smile at his new workplace.
