VEENENDAAL – A 28-year-old man from Veenendaal has been sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing his eldest daughter and systematically assaulting and threatening his wife and four children. After serving his sentence, he is not allowed to have contact with his ex-wife and children for five years. He has to pay his ex-wife 1500 euros in damages.

The eldest daughter of M. was 10 years old when she filed a complaint against her father last April. During sex education at school, it was noticed that she was behaving strangely and was bothered by something. She then told a teacher what was going on. According to the OM, the abuse started when the girl was only 8 years old. During several careful interrogations, she explained in great detail how that had happened.

Legal and convincing evidence

The court finds it proven that the Syrian Kurd was guilty of the abuse and mistreatment over a period of several years. According to the court, the detailed statements of the victims are consistent and mutually supportive. Tapped telephone conversations that the man had from prison are also convincing evidence of his guilt, according to the court.

There is a good chance that they will suffer from this for the rest of their lives.

Judge

Through those conversations, the suspect also put pressure on his ex-wife to withdraw the charges against him. He also threatened his family members with death several times when he was incarcerated. “If this news gets out, I’ll kill my family and then myself,” he said in one of the conversations.

Due to the physical and psychological abuse, the father has created an unsafe home situation and the children have been seriously damaged, the court said. They were beaten not only with the bare hand, but also with a belt and a cable. According to the judges, there is a good chance that they will suffer from this for the rest of their lives.

Appeal?

The verdict is equal to the sentence demanded by the public prosecutor two weeks ago. The defendant’s lawyer then asked for a partial acquittal, because the statements about the abuse were implausible. The daughter would not have told the truth to the police.

The Veenendaler himself was not present at the verdict. According to his lawyer, there is a good chance that he will appeal. He has two weeks to do that.
