The easiest way to check that the banknote you receive in your hand is genuine is to wiggle the banknote. All banknotes have a color-changing image in the upper right corner. When you wiggle the banknote, the image and denomination in the image change color from gold to green. There is also a short film showing how to wiggle the banknote.
On the Riksbank’s website there are more tips on how to detect if a banknote is fake.
If you spot a counterfeit note, do not accept it. If you have already received a counterfeit note – try to remember how you might have received it, and then file a police report.
Anyone who works in, for example, a shop or a restaurant and receives a fake banknote from a customer should keep the banknote, ask for the customer’s ID and call the police. But you also have to be alert to the circumstances – in a threatening situation, you must cooperate and not expose yourself to danger.
