Feel de-prioritized after police investment • “Also supports society”
The healthcare association thinks that their students are being de-prioritised. The government wants police students to have their student loans written off and now the nursing association wants healthcare students to get the same message.
– After all, we are also part of the society-supporting professions, says Marlene Juhl, chairperson of the Student Care Association.
The government is to submit a proposal which means that those who study at the police training in the fall semester of 2024 or later, under certain conditions and conditions, will have their student loans repaid or written off.
They want to make it more attractive to become a police officer.
– The Sweden Democrats and the government agree that those who study at the police academy will have their student loans written off, said Jimmie Åkesson during a press conference on Wednesday.
Vårdförbundet: We are also supporting society
However, the proposal receives criticism from the Vårdförbundet student. Not because they think the idea itself is bad, but because they also want to get their student loans written off.
– It is good to invest in police students. But we want to see investment in healthcare. It is a burning situation. It is not sustainable at the moment, says Marlene Juhl, president of the Student Care Association, and continues:
– Because we are, after all, also part of the professions that support society.
Points to the staff shortage
The government wants the proposal on written-off student loans to mean more police officers in the future, which is seen as crucial to being able to combat the growing problems with gang crime.
The healthcare association thinks that the government should also take into account the shortage of personnel in the healthcare sector.
– The shortage of nursing staff is enormous. It is a fact. It’s a matter of skills supply and we see that people can’t bear to work an entire professional life. There is a lack of resources, says Marlene Juhl.
She believes that student loan write-offs for those studying nursing programs would make a big difference.
– I think that would be a good way to attract more people to our professions. So that we also get staff who want to work.
