After the title drought was broken last season with the victory in the League Cup and a third place in the Premier League, the demands on Erik ten Hag’s team have increased.
However, United’s home opener was a disappointment for a long time – and the home team got away with nothing more than a scare.
The visitors called for a penalty when new United goalkeeper André Onana drove over substitute Sasa Kalajdzic in added time.
But there was no punishment.
Wolverhampton were probably as good as the home team and Matheus Cunha was a constant threat, without getting a payoff.
The big chance came at the start of the second half, but Cunha shot the outside of the post in an open position from close range.
United started with two of their profile signings, goalkeeper André Onana, Inter, and Mason Mount, Chelsea.
Mount didn’t make much of a fuss and was replaced in the 68th minute.
But when the disgruntled bus whistles began to rise, United struck.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka lifted the ball to Raphaël Varane who headed in 1-0 from close range.
Then Onana stepped forward with a sharp foot parry on Fabio Silva’s position at the end.
Victor Nilsson Lindelöf had to start on the bench but was substituted for the second half instead of Lisandro Martínez
