US Vice President JD Vance accompanies his wife Usha to Greenland on Friday.

But the Americans have re -stowed in the travel plan and visit a military base instead of the capital Nuuk, according to Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiag.

– A relief for many, says the newspaper’s editor -in -chief Masaana Egee.

US Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance visit Greenland at the end of the week. The visit, which is not official, is done in the light of US President Donald Trump’s recurring play that the country wants to take over the autonomous Danish territory.

The original plan was that Usha Vance would visit historical sites, learn about the Greenlandic cultural heritage and attend Greenland’s national dog team race. But on Tuesday evening, in connection with the Vice President announced that he too is going to Greenland, the plans were changed.

Set activities

Now, the American group will instead visit the military base Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as the Thulebasen, on Greenland’s northwestern coast. The previously planned activities have thus been canceled, according to information to the SERMITSIAG magazine.

– That they choose not to go to Nuuk during coalition treatments and that they do not go to Sisimiut for such an important race I think is a relief for many, says editor -in -chief Masaana Egee to his own publication.

Egee believes that the changed travel plans are “good for the United States” if Americans want future cooperation, but at the same time emphasizes that one should not believe that this means that the US interest in Greenland has decreased.

The formation of a new government is ongoing in the Greenland capital Nuuk after the parliamentary elections on March 11.

“Unacceptable pressure”

Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in an interview with TV2 earlier on Tuesday that she takes a serious look at the situation and emphasized that “cannot be made a private visit with official representatives of another country”.

“Unacceptable pressure is put on both Denmark and Greenland in this situation,” said Frederiksen.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasizes that many countries around the world support Denmark and Greenland’s attitude.

“Many conversations with colleagues from all over the world. The commitment to the principle of territorial integrity and the sovereignty of nations is strong – in Greenland, in Europe and outside. We must stand up for these principles,” he writes in a post on Facebook.
