Researchers examined links between traffic-related air pollution, such as nitric oxide and particulates, and the number of heart attacks. Nitric oxide (NO) results from combustion at high temperatures, especially from diesel engines. Burning, wear from brakes and tires, and dust are also sources of harmful particles. An analysis of 18,000 Berliners revealed that higher daily NO levels increase the incidence of heart attacks. Smokers appear unaffected by the smoke, perhaps already inhaling the toxic fumes, experts said. Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, from the British Heart Foundation, said: “These findings add to the evidence that polluted air has a higher risk of heart attack in nonsmokers.” As many as 11,000 deaths from heart disease and circulatory disorders can occur annually due to air pollution.
