The Haute Autorité de Santé recommends allowing nurses, pharmacists and midwives to prescribe and administer non-live vaccines included in the vaccination schedule for people aged 16 and over, under two conditions.

Following the increase in vaccination figures against Covid-19 at the time of extending vaccine skills to more health professionals, HAS now recommends the same thing for all vaccines.

Already the case for midwives since 2016

The involvement of health professionals in vaccination campaigns has been shown to have a positive impact on vaccination coverage and safety. Indeed, this makes it possible to reduce health inequalities and promote prevention in the field.

This is particularly the case of midwives since 2016, who are authorized to prescribe and perform vaccination for women, newborns and their entourage. Pharmacists and nurses can also vaccinate against seasonal flu.

    Official HAS recommendation

This finding prompted the High Authority for Health to rule on the possibility of nurses, pharmacists and midwives administering non-live vaccines included in the vaccination schedule for people aged 16 and over.

A measure which would concern vaccines against: diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-poliomyelitis, human papillomaviruses, pneumococcus, hepatitis A and B, meningococci A, C, W, Y and influenza. On the other hand, this would not concern vaccines against meningococcal disease and rabies, nor immunocompromised people, whose vaccination schedules are more complex.

    Two requirements

The body now recommends that this be put in place, under two conditions: the establishment of appropriate training for these professionals and the strengthening of the traceability of vaccination, thanks to digital tools.

Finally, the HAS concludes by mentioning the future development of a recommendation concerning “the interprofessional implementation of the various vaccinations by the health professionals concerned“.
