UTRECHTSE HEUVELRUG – The municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug will receive a hundred refugees from Ukraine. This concerns extra places on top of the six hundred people who can already be accommodated in the asylum seekers’ center in Leersum.
“Our municipality has always been a compassionate municipality. We have been taking in refugees for years who have fled their homes. Even now, the municipality is taking its responsibility,” says Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
It is not yet clear where the 100 extra reception places will be. “We are committed to sustainable shelters, where people can stay for a longer period of time,” says Mayor Frits Naafs. “The preparation of this may take a little more time, but it offers people a better place. I am happy that we can do this for these refugees. I am confident that we can organize this well.”
Earlier today, the municipality of Utrecht announced that an emergency shelter has been opened for refugees from Ukraine in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Three hundred camp beds have been placed in an event hall to offer refugees a place to sleep and a roof over their heads. The refugees will only stay in the hall for a short time, waiting for a better shelter.
Amersfoort
The municipality of Amersfoort has also announced that it wants to be hospitable. A project group has started preparing for the arrival of Ukrainian refugees to the city. The project group also answers questions from refugees and residents.
One Ukrainian family of four has already been taken care of in Amersfoort. In addition, about seventy people were taken care of at Amersfoort’s home. “Mostly this concerns friends and family from Ukraine,” the municipality said.
In addition, the municipality has made employees available to help in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. The refugees in the Jaarbeurs will be redistributed among municipalities in the province, including Amer species. How much and where the municipality will receive those refugees is still being investigated.
Montfoorters convert office building
Other places in the region are also working hard to create shelters for refugees. In Montfoort, an office building was converted by volunteers in two days so that refugees can be accommodated. Last night the first people arrived there.
