Utrechtse Heuvelrug must adjust plans for recreational parks

More and more people live in a holiday park. Figures from Statistics Netherlands show that on January 1, 2024, just over 59,000 people were registered with a home address at a holiday park throughout the Netherlands. That is 14 percent more than five years ago. In the province of Utrecht, more than four thousand people now live in a caravan or house at a holiday park.

While there was an increase in many places, there was a decrease in the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug. In January 2019, around 760 people lived in a holiday park. Five years later there were only 610. This is because the municipality has been enforcing against permanent residence on recreational sites since 2022.

The reasons why people choose to live permanently in a holiday home are diverse. It happens that people lose their home due to debts or after a divorce and seek refuge in a holiday park.
