The medieval sewer, the so-called gulp of St. Marie, was partly removed when the office of the Steenkolen Handelsvereniging (the SHV building) was built on the corner of Mariaplaats-Rijnkade in 1958. During the work, archaeologists found wall remains from several centuries, which showed that the sewer had been in use for centuries.
