The plans come from Mahmut Sungur of DENK and Rick van der Zweth of the Labor Party. “Several streets in Utrecht are named after controversial people from the colonial past,” said Van der Zweth in the council. “And those current colonial street names and monuments present a one-sided picture of history.” DENK also wants something to be done about the controversial street names. “Controversial persons from the colonial past, who are responsible for thousands of deaths, including the ancestors of many Dutch people, should not be honored,” said party leader Mahmut Sungur. The PvdA also believes that far too few streets are named after women in Utrecht, the social democrat kept it at 10%.
