For her dissertation, Floor Scheffers investigated whether drinking pure fruit juice without added sugars or other additives can be an alternative to eating fruit or whether it is better to avoid it, like soft drinks. The researcher, who was supervised by the RIVM and the UMC Utrecht, looked at the effect on people with a chronic illness, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes or asthma. Scheffers concluded that pure fruit juice is not as healthy as fruit, but also not as unhealthy as soft drinks.
