The minister sees that other cities are also struggling with the space for greenery. “I sometimes call it the battle for space, which is already happening in cities.” Frank van den Brink, tree technical advisor at the municipality of Utrecht, recognizes the shortage in the city. But there are all kinds of techniques to make a tree grow, even in an open square. “You can do that with a tree bunker. That is a bunker filled with soil. Or a system with crates containing soil. But it also needs an aeration shaft. It is very difficult to come up with a good growth structure. But once you succeed and you put a nice tree on it, that’s beautiful!”
