For a street name, or a change of a street name, a decision is required from the mayor and alderman. This is recommended by the Street Naming Committee. Anyone can make a suggestion for a new street name through them, but there are a few requirements.
– The name may not yet be used within the municipality
– To avoid confusion, street names should not be too similar.
– A street name has a subject: such as birds or professors.
– The name must be easy to pronounce.
– If a street is named after a person, it must have been of impeccable conduct.
– As a rule, the municipality of Utrecht only names streets after people who have passed away.
– A street name should not offend anyone.
