It was not obvious that Doedens would make a career in the legal profession: he dropped out of school without a diploma and made a living as a jazz pianist and warehouse clerk. Later he picked up his studies again and was apprenticed to Moszkowicz senior. He eventually moved into an office on the Oudegracht in Utrecht, where he would stay for 28 years.
