Slavery past

Last year, the national Advisory Board Dialogue Group on Slavery History advised the government, among other things, to recognize the role of the Dutch authority in slavery and that apologies would help to heal the historical suffering.

According to the advisory board, this is not about condemning individuals or groups of people, but about the responsibility of the Dutch state. Structural funds should also be made available to put an end to the damaging effects of the colonial past.

The cabinet would respond to the advice in the spring of 2022, but has not yet taken a decision on it. Apologies are therefore not expected this week. Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht have already apologized for their part.
