UTRCA program offers native trees for reduced price with Tree Power

Tree Power is back for a fourth year in Stratford, and the popular Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) program will again provide watershed residents with affordable native trees through partnerships with municipalities and sponsors.

Around 300 trees were sold in 2023, and this year local residents will get to pick from 250 autumn fantasy maple, black cherry, bur oak, red maple, red oak, tulip, white pine and white spruces, each for $25.

“The trees are high quality and a great price,” UTRCA communications and marketing specialist Emily Chandler said. “It’s also successful because we have the messaging from us and our partners. People are so excited to pick up their trees. It’s a really nice program to be a part of.”

Initially a London initiative, the program has caught on with much of Perth County.

“People know about climate change and know we need to have more trees planted,” Chandler said, “and it’s an easy way for them to take environmental action and plant that tree on their property.”

Not only are trees aesthetically pleasing and often serve as landscaping features, but they improve soil and water conservation, store carbon, provide shade to decrease home cooling needs, provide habitat for birds and wildlife, and prevent erosion, Chandler said.

“It helps (cities and municipalities) meet their goals of having more trees planted. It’s kind of a goodwill program (and) it’s a win for everyone,” she said.

The trees have sold out each year, with Festival Hydro helping out to keep costs down for residents.

“This initiative has seen an incredible turnout over the last few years,” Festival Hydro chief executive officer Jeff Graham said. “Tree Power truly embodies Festival Hydro’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reflects our dedication to making a meaningful impact within the community we call home, and our planet.”

Online orders will open on Friday, March 1, at 8 am by visiting thamesriver.on.ca.

Residents are asked to purchase one per property, so that as many people can benefit from the program as possible.

Tree pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, April 13.
