The US sees two reasons why Syria has lost the country’s second largest city, Aleppo, to jihadists and other forces: the country’s rejection of a peace process in 2015 and too much reliance on support from Russia and Iran.
This is stated in a statement from Sean Savett, spokesperson for the US National Security Council. Both things contributed to what is now unfolding, according to Savett.
Just to be safe, he makes it clear that the US has absolutely nothing to do with the lightning offensive against Aleppo by opponents of Assad.
“It (read: the offensive) is led by Hayat Tahir al-Shalam, which is a terrorist organization,” emphasizes Sean Savett.
