Republican Kevin McCarthy has been elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives after 15 attempts.
McCarthy tried throughout Friday night to persuade enough party members and promise concessions to reach the Speaker’s podium. During the evening, McCarthy first managed to bring in 15 more conservative rebels. Only one vote was missing after the 14th ballot. By then, two of the remaining opponents had dropped out, lowering the number of votes needed for McCarthy to take the baton.
The 14 polls so far show a fractured party where former President Donald Trump’s supporters have hurt the Republicans.
