A vote was held in the US House of Representatives on the future of the world-famous social media platform TikTok. In the vote, the first approval was given to ban TikTok, owned by Chinese ByteDance, in the USA, with 352 votes against 65. The bill passed by the House of Representatives requires ByteDance to sell TikTok’s assets in the USA within 6 months, and if it does not sell, the platform will be banned in the USA.
WILL BE SUBMITTED TO BIDEN FOR APPROVAL
The bill for TikTok, which has 170 million users in the USA, will be submitted to US President Joe Biden for approval after the vote in the Senate. A source familiar with the matter stated that TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will visit Capitol Hill today to meet with senators.
WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE IN APPLICATION STORES
It is not yet known whether China will approve any sale or whether ByteDance will divest TikTok’s US assets within six months. If TikTok is not sold, it will not be available in the application stores of Apple, Google and similar companies.
If TikTok is not sold, it will not be available in the application stores of Apple, Google and similar companies.
STATEMENT FROM TIKTOK
In the statement made by TikTok before the vote, it was said: “This law has a predetermined result: TikTok’s complete ban in the USA. The government is trying to take away the Constitutional right to freedom of expression of 170 million Americans.”
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated yesterday that the purpose of the bill is not to ban TikTok, but to end Chinese ownership.
