The US claims that Iran has seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman that is flagged in the Marshall Islands. The ship is said to have last been in Kuwait and is on its way to Houston, Texas. The crew reportedly raised the alarm that Iran was taking over the vessel, called the Advantage Sweet, while it was still in international waters.
The Advantage Sweet is, according to the US Navy, the fifth vessel seized by Iran in the past two years.
In recent years, Iran has carried out several attacks in or near the Strait of Hormuz, where a large part of the world’s oil is transported. The attacks began after the United States, under President Donald Trump, left the nuclear agreement between Iran and several major powers.
Iran has not commented on US reports on Thursday that it had taken over a ship.
