The Supreme Court struck down broad abortion rights last June, and many states have since tightened their abortion laws.
US Supreme Court allows emergency abortions in Idaho.
Last August, Idaho passed a law that amounted to an almost complete ban on abortion. However, a federal judge in Idaho barred the state from enforcing the abortion ban in medical emergencies if women threatened by pregnancy complications need emergency care.
Today, Thursday, the Supreme Court decided by a vote of 6-3 that abortions are allowed in medical emergencies for the time being.
A year ago in June, the same Supreme Court judges overturned the broad right to abortion, when the Roe v. Wade decision, which had guided the country’s abortion policy since 1973, went awry in court proceedings.
