The United States has transferred a prisoner from the Guantánamo base in Cuba to Algeria. Imprisoned Said bin Brahim bin Umran Bakush was captured in Pakistan in 2002, when US forces conducted an aggressive crackdown to detain suspected terrorists.
Last year, a review board determined that Bakush could be taken to Algeria as he had no important position in the terrorist network al-Qaeda.
Algeria agreed to receive Bakush, and will monitor him and inform the United States of his activities.
Suspected members of al-Qaida, and additional people named or rumored were taken to the US military base Guantánamo in Cuba. At most, 680 detainees were held at Guantánamo in 2003. After Bakush’s transfer, 30 detainees remain at the base.
