US Secretary of State: The opposition won in Venezuela

Earlier this week, a US diplomat spoke at a meeting that it was Edmundo Gonzales who won the elections in Venezuela, not Nicolas Maduro.

Now US Secretary of State Antony Blinken joins the same chorus.

“Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the majority of votes in Venezuela’s presidential election on July 28,” Foreign Minister Antony Blinken said in a statement.

In the same statement, he hits hard at Maduro’s threats against the opposition.

“The US rejects Maduro’s unfounded accusations against opposition leaders. Maduro and his representatives’ threats to arrest opposition leaders, including Edmundo González and María Corina Machado, are an undemocratic attempt to suppress political participation and maintain power,” says Blinken.
