US ready to support watered-down UN resolution

In a draft of the resolution, a call for an end to the violence has been removed. Instead, it focuses on getting humanitarian aid into Gaza.

“We have put in place a mechanism that facilitates humanitarian aid, and we are ready to vote for it,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters overnight.

The resolution calls on the UN Secretary-General to appoint a coordinator to monitor that aid shipments to Gaza are only humanitarian aid. Israel and the US have wanted Israel to be responsible for controlling the trucks entering Gaza.

Humanitarian aid has entered Gaza in recent weeks, but is expected to be able to expand significantly if the resolution is voted through in the Security Council.

The US has recently been pressured to call for a ceasefire, including by France, which has been critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
