Republican Senator Josh Hawley will vote no to admit Sweden and Finland to NATO, The Hill reports.
The reason for the decision is that Hawley does not believe that the United States should expand its security policy involvement in Europe. In a debate article published in the magazine The National Interest, Hawley certainly expresses understanding for the two Nordic countries’ desire to join the defense alliance.
But the US should not focus on Europe, but on China, which he calls “the US’s main international adversary”.
Since before, 18 Republican politicians in the Senate and the House of Representatives, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz, have said no to NATO membership for Sweden and Finland. However, a clear majority of both the Democratic and Republican members support a yes to the applications.
Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hopes to hold a vote on the issue before it’s time for members to take a month-long recess starting Aug. 8.
