After the United States earlier this week introduced trade tariffs against Mexico and Canada, the question of possible exceptions has been raised.
Already on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump opened for being prepared to make some adjustments to protect US companies. In an interview with Bloomberg earlier on Wednesday, he developed his reasoning and stated that it is probably not about lowering customs, but instead makes exceptions for certain product groups.
Such a decision came then on Wednesday evening. In connection with a press conference, White House’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt states that President Trump has decided to raise customs for US vehicle manufacturers regarding vehicles entering the United States under the North American free trade agreement that existed between the United States, Mexico and Canada. The exception is valid for one month.
Opens for additional relief
The decision must have been preceded by deliberations between Trump and the three vehicle companies General Motors, Ford and Stellantis.
– We talked to the three major vehicle manufacturers. We will give a month’s deferral for all vehicles coming in via USMCA, says Leavitt with reference to a statement from Trump.
Earlier on Wednesday, Elisabet Kopelman, USA economist at SEB Customs, commented on US companies to TT.
– These tariffs hit very hard against the United States too. So I think it would be reasonable if the United States took steps to try to mitigate this, Elisabet Kopelman said, adding:
– This harms American business.
At the same time as the message that some time -limited exceptions are now made, Leavitt is made that the United States is opening to make further deviations from customs and that Donald Trump is open to discussions about product groups that can be exempted.
