Topuz’s arrest caused a crisis between the USA and Türkiye. Following the coup attempt in Turkey on July 5, 2016, Metin Topuz, who worked at the US Consulate General in Istanbul, was arrested on the charge of ‘aiding an armed terrorist organization’.
Topuz’s arrest in 2017 caused diplomatic tension between Washington and Ankara, which deny the accusations. The United States suspended non-immigrant visa applications from Turkey for a time in 2017 in response to Topuz’s arrest.
Topuz, who was tried within the scope of the Fethullah Gülen organization, was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison in 2020.
