The US attacked cruise robots belonging to the Islamist Houthi movement on Saturday night. According to the US military, the six cruise missiles in Yemen were “ready to launch”.

The data comes from the US operational headquarters Centcom.

“They posed a direct threat to US warships and merchant ships in the region,” said a statement from Centcom, as quoted by Britain’s BBC.

The Houthi movement, with close ties to and support from Iran, has been carrying out attacks and attempted hijackings of merchant and warships in the Red Sea, prompting the US and UK to respond by attacking Houthi strongholds.

Earlier on Saturday, the US military said it had shot down eight drones that were flying off the coast of Yemen, as well as destroying four more drones that were supposed to be ready for flight, the BBC reported.
