US and UK attack Yemen

Airstrikes by drones from warships and warplanes have hit several cities in the country, which are used by the Iran-backed Islamist movement, which controls the country’s capital, Sanaa.

The targets include logistics hubs, air defense systems and weapons depots, US defense sources told the AP news agency.

US President Joe Biden says that “the attacks were carried out successfully and that he will not hesitate to take further action”.

The British Prime Minister says that “Britain will always stand up for freedom of movement and trade”.

Warned of consequences

The Huthi movement has threatened to attack ships it claims could benefit Israel, in retaliation for the Gaza war. But several commercial merchant ships with no direct connection to Israel have been attacked.

The United States, Great Britain and several of their allies have previously warned of “consequences” if the Huthi movement’s attacks in the Red Sea continue.

Worry about escalation

During Thursday evening, the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was called at short notice to an extraordinary cabinet meeting, and the British media then had information about the countries’ plans in Yemen.

There is concern that the conflict could be the final straw for the Huthi rebels’ allies in Iran.
