Charlotte Baris: In France, the aftermath of the European elections was a real earthquake. For ten days, we have only been talking about the lightning campaign for the early legislative elections, which will outline the contours of a new national assembly. We almost forget what we were voting for on June 9. Namely the renewal of the European Parliament.
These results, too, have been widely commented on. In the losing camp first, we find Renew, Emmanuel Macron’s party in Brussels, which lost 23 seats (including around ten French MEPs). There is also the social democratic party to which Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, belongs, which recorded its lowest score in a hundred years. And then, there are the Greens, who achieved a very good score in 2019 and who are losing a quarter of their representatives this year.
Opposite, in the winning camp, it is obviously the far right that has been talked about the most. Across Europe, many radical and populist parties recorded very good scores. There is the RN and Reconquête in France of course, but also the AfD in Germany, Giorgia Meloni’s party in Italy and the Flemish nationalists in Belgium.
But there is, however, another winner who is talked about a little less. This is Ursula von der Leyen. The President of the Commission is strengthened by this election. In a few weeks, she will seek a second term at the head of the European executive, but for now, she has a discreet triumph. Perhaps because nothing is decided yet. In this episode of La Loupe, we look at his career, which could perhaps allow him to extend his reign on the Commission.
