Uppsala’s tram has cost 300 million – before construction has started

On Wednesday, the Liberals and Social Democrats held a joint press conference at the travel center in Uppsala.

– We have reached a broad agreement, says Jennie Claesson (L),

It includes, among other things, building a tramway in Uppsala, for which there is now a political majority. The plan is for the first sod to be broken in 2024. According to sources for SVT, the municipality has invested around SEK 250 to 300 million on the project, before the shovel has even been put down.

“Need to solve Uppsala’s traffic problems”

– That’s right. We follow the existing budget, which is about 6.1 billion in total and where the state accounts for half, says Erik Pelling (S).

Is it responsible to put so much money in these times of crisis?

– Braking out of an uphill is not an issue for us. To get through this crisis, we also need to invest in the future. We need to solve Uppsala’s traffic problems and create security for working life and companies, says Erik Pelling (S).

What are you prioritizing to be able to afford this?

– We will return to it in the autumn’s budget work.

The alliance in Uppsala split

The Liberals’ agreement with the Social Democrats has led to the Alliance’s future being uncertain.

– A collaboration should be characterized by openness and respect – and this action does not do that, says Therez Almerfors (M), municipal councillor.

The Center Party’s municipal councilor Ehsan Nasari is also disappointed.

– I don’t understand how L and S are going to get the calculation together with both securing welfare without at the same time not risking the municipality’s long-term financial stability, he says in a press release.
