Brantford police said Friday afternoon that they closed a section of the Wayne Gretzky Parkway in both directions after concrete began falling from the overpass onto Highway 403.
The westbound lanes of 403 were shut down by the Ontario Provincial Police.
City police said a Ministry of Transportation engineer has conducted an initial assessment and, as a result, the overpass will remain closed overnight.
The overpass will be reevaluated Saturday, police said.
Traffic was re-routed and motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area.
