Upcoming action RPG on Steam does without a map and quest markers – you have to rely on your instincts and a drone

In Hell is Us you have to rely on your senses, because the ARPG does without maps, quest markers and compass. Your only help is a small drone. In a new trailer, the developers show gameplay for their upcoming game on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox.

What kind of game is this? Hell is Us is an upcoming action RPG from Nacon and Rogue Factor, scheduled for release in 2025 for Steam, PS5 and Xbox. The setting of the single-player title is the shattered land of Hadea in 1993, in which you as a player uncover the secrets and explore a dark environment.

The ARPG is intended to be a kind of “throwback” to games from the 1990s, because the development team has “a lot of love” for how the games were made and experienced during that time. Because of this, Hell is Us doesn’t take players by the hand, explains Jonathan Jacques-Belletete, the creative director and art director at Rogue Factor, in the YouTube video.

In the video, the developers present over 15 minutes of gameplay from Hell is Us:

Hell is Us puts you “in the driver’s seat of your exploration”

What does Hell is Us miss out on? The upcoming action RPG does without maps, a compass and quest markers. In the YouTube video, Jonathan Jacques-Belletete explains that some games of the 90s were characterized by not having to take the player by the hand.

To this he says:

You kind of had to figure things out on your own. You were truly in control of your exploration and your own discoveries. And that’s exactly what we’re trying to do in Hell is Us, of course with a modern flair and some kind of knowledge of game design and so on. But it puts you back in the driver’s seat of your experience and your exploration, and then the outcome and the joy of your discoveries.

These are the core elements of Hell is Us:

  • You play and fight in the third-person perspective.
  • According to the developer, the single-player game is 50% exploration and 50% combat.
  • There is no map, no quest markers and no compass. You rely entirely on your instincts and your companion drone.
  • KAPI, your drone, has numerous abilities with which you can upgrade it. She supports you in fights and puzzles.
  • It is important to listen carefully to what the NPCs report and to pay close attention to the surroundings.
  • There are various weapons – including swords, spears and axes.
  • You will encounter different enemies with different types of strengths and powers.
  • In Hell is Us it is therefore necessary that you carefully explore your surroundings and have conversations with the NPCs in the world. Your drone is able to translate the languages and scripts in the country and assist you with puzzles. Other than that, you’re on your own – and your discoveries are yours alone.

Combat takes place in the third-person perspective and is an integral part of Hell is Us. Jonathan Jacques-Belletete emphasizes that it is not a Soulslike, the game is more in the middle range. It’s not too easy, not overly difficult and there is a learning curve, explains the developer. “It’s: have fun, get in and hack ‘n’ slash,” he says.

When does Hell is Us come out? So far the developers are only talking about 2025; an exact date is not known. You can already put Hell is Us on your wish list on the various platforms to be informed about an upcoming release.
