Eight women in their 80s and 90s in the Stockholm area were subjected to so-called aging crimes on Saturday.
– The feeling is that we have an unusually large number tonight, says police spokesperson Daniel Wikdahl.
Whether it is the same perpetrators or a gang, the police cannot say, but it is clear that the approach to the frauds is similar.
It starts with a phone call from what is said to be an alarm center warning that the people are about to be exposed to a crime.
– To protect the alleged crime victims, you must come there with police officers or security guards to take care of valuables. But that’s not how we work, says Daniel Wikdahl.
In similar cases, fraudsters have claimed to work at a bank, but that’s not how banks work either, says Wikdahl.
Afterwards, men and women in uniform-like clothes appeared, whereupon the people left behind jewellery, gold and other valuables. The value of the stolen items is “currently impossible to estimate”, according to the police.
The incidents have occurred during the afternoon and evening in Nacka, Botkyrka and Sollentuna. The crimes are classified, among other things, as gross fraud, attempted fraud and impersonation of a public position.
