The ice has already settled in places and the Norwegian Maritime Administration has had to put an icebreaker to work earlier than usual to open the waterways.

The ship Ale, the Maritime Administration’s smallest icebreaker, set out from Luleå harbor on Friday to break up packed ice in Skellefte Bay.

“It was many years ago that ice breaking started as early as December 1,” says Amund Lindberg, head of winter shipping at the Swedish Maritime Administration, in a press release.
