Breaking news: The United Nations (UN) Security Council extended the decision allowing the use of the Cilvegözü Border Gate in Turkey to deliver humanitarian aid to northwest Syria for another 6 months.
The 15-member UN Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution allowing humanitarian aid to be delivered to approximately 4 million people through Turkey until 10 July.
HELP IS GOING AT ONLY ONE BORDER GATE
According to the UN, around 15.3 million people (the highest number since the conflict began in 2011) will need humanitarian protection and assistance in 2023.
According to the draft resolution adopted by the UN Security Council in 2014, international aid is sent to the regions in northwest Syria.
Currently, food and medicine aid is delivered only through the Cilvegözü Border Gate.
The following statement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the UN’s decision:
“We welcome the United Nations (UN) Security Council’s decision on January 9, 2023, to extend the United Nations cross-border aid mechanism for northwestern Syria for 6 months. This UN mechanism provides emergency relief to 4.1 million people in need in the region. “The dimensions of the humanitarian crisis in Northwest Syria and regional stability necessitate a longer-term preservation of the UN mechanism. Turkey will continue to cooperate with the international community in line with this goal, as it has done so far.” (AA)
