Unknown insurance that few people know about: “One million kroner”

Unknown insurance that few people know about One million kroner

There is a free insurance that many Swedes have not taken advantage of, even though several of them are entitled to it. It can be good to know, especially in late summer when the schools fill up with students again.

The insurance goes by the name school insurance and the reason why so few take advantage of it may be because it is not something that schools and municipalities advertise for, says Jenny Sparringlawyer specializing in personal injury and personal insurance, at Konsumenternas.

Unknown insurance – may be available up to ten years after

In an interview with TV4 Nyheterna, she says that school insurance applies to children who have accidents or are so seriously injured that they have to seek medical care.

– What is important to know is that as a parent you must contact the school insurance yourself and report the damage. The school does not do that for the parents, says Sparring to the channel.

Despite its name, the insurance does not only apply during school hours – but also on weekends, holidays and holidays.

In 2015, the statute of limitations for injuries was extended, which means that it is still possible to receive compensation for injuries that occurred between three and ten years ago. However, Sparring is clear that it will be more difficult to prove an injury that is several years old.

– Report as soon as possible if the child has had an accident, because it is more difficult to prove the damage if you wait several years, she says to TV4.

But how much can you get in compensation? News24 have taken a closer look at school insurance.

– The most common compensation is for scars and then the compensation depends on where on the body the scar is, says Sparring to Nyheter24, and continues:

– Scars on the face, for example, are compensated with a higher amount than on the leg. It is often a matter of a few thousand kroner, and is determined based on a scar table found in the insurance conditions.

Sparring explains that disability, i.e. physical ability to function, is a decisive factor for what the school insurance can provide for compensation.

– It is common to receive compensation for permanent injuries with a lower disability of less than 10 percent, says Sparring, and gives examples:

– If the child has a permanent disability and perhaps a disability of five percent, the compensation will be SEK 50,000 if the insurance amount is one million, says Sparring.

In order to be entitled to compensation, the damage or scar needs to be assessed long before the statute of limitations has run out.

– The permanent damage and scars are assessed no earlier than one year after the damage event.

School insurance can pay out large sums. For the compensation to reach millions, the injury must have caused permanent incapacity for work in the child.

– The insurance amounts can vary between school insurance policies. If the insurance amount is one million and the child is injured so seriously that the child cannot enter the working life, and causes a permanent inability to work due to the injury, the child receives compensation of one million kroner for financial disability, says Sparring to Nyheter24.
