Unjustly forgotten Brad Pitt film that tells a devastating 25

In the 1990s, thanks to films like Fight Club, Seven and Interview with the Vampire, Brad Pitt became one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood. While those three films keep coming up as Pitt’s best roles, the 1996 drama Sleepers has fallen into obscurity.

This is quite surprising, because Sleepers not only tells a stirring story. The film features some big names both in front of and behind the camera. Tonight you can watch him late at night on TV. Sleepers is running at 11:15 p.m. on ZDFneo. Unfortunately there is no repetition.

Sleepers on TV: Brad Pitt in a touching mixture of courtroom drama and revenge film

The story of Sleepers first takes us to New York in the 1960s. Here we get to know the youngsters Michael, Shakes, Tommy and John. In a thoughtless prank, they injure a passer-by and are then sent to a reformatory. There they are taken over by the overseer sexually abused.

The second part shifts the story to the 1980s. The boys have grown up and seem to have found their place in life. Michael works as a prosecutor, while Shakes is traveling as a journalist in New York. Meanwhile, John and Tommy have strayed onto the criminal path.

It quickly becomes clear that they have not overcome their past. The trauma runs deep and Michael does everything he can to put the perpetrator behind bars. What follows is a mixture of courtroom drama and revenge film that, alongside Pitt, stars Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver.

Sleepers was directed by director Barry Levinson, of Good Morning, Vietnam and Rain Man fame. The film music comes from Maestro John Williams (Star Wars), while none other than the German camera legend Michael Ballhaus (Departed) is responsible for the pictures.
