United Way Perth-Huron kicks off campaign to raise $2.6M

United Way Perth-Huron announced its 2024-2025 fundraising campaign goal of $2.6 million, an increase of $300,000 from last year.

The increase is at least due in part to increased demand at the Connection Centre, which provides services for residents who are unhoused. Around 30 people a day use those services, United Way Perth-Huron executive director Ryan Erb said.

“That demand is pushing us to try to raise more money,” he said. “We also have organizations in the community that haven’t had an increase from the government for a very long time, and they’re struggling to make ends meet. The United Way is trying to increase, as we’re able, to support their programs and services as well.”

There are over 40 programs and services that United Way is supporting this year, Erb added.

“We’re dealing with inflation. We’re dealing with longer lineups than ever, and we’re dealing with demand for service. We also recognize how critically important it is this year to do that.”

There is a specific formula for the fundraising goal, Erb said.

“It actually is all about math,” he continued, noting that some internal projects, including United Housing, are contributing to the increased goal.
“We add up all the needs from all the organizations that we fund across the region. They write applications, they ask for a certain amount of money. So it’s pretty straightforward math in that regard.”

This year’s campaign is being co-chaired by Kristin Sainsbury and John Wolfe.

“We are delighted to be the co-campaign chairs of this fundraising event,” Wolfe told the crowd gathered at Market Square on Friday afternoon. “Even as we’ve started this ride, the pre-campaign, we’ve had so many people reach out to offer help and support. And there’s some amazing things happening already.”

According to Erb, around 15 per cent of the campaign total has already been raised. The campaign is set to last until March 30 when United Way’s fiscal year ends, though Erb is confident the organization will achieve its goal in the next six months.

“We’ll raise it all (by) then. We have some generous people that help us out over the summer, so it’s all going well. We’re a little ahead of last year, so that’s amazing.”
