United broke the gloomy trend – took an important victory

The goalscoring has been on strike for United, with Victor Nilsson Lindelöf once again starting at centre-forward, of late. And at home against Wolverhampton it looked to continue in the same spirit as chances were burned on a conveyor belt.

But then the payoff came in the 32nd minute. A quick counterattack freed Antony, who produced another Anthony with the surname Martial.

The Frenchman was able to roll in 1-0 in an empty net and United had the lead at the break.

After the break, Wolverhampton came out and applied pressure through a couple of set pieces. But the home team resisted and could and should have decided the match earlier.

Instead, it was exciting all the way in. Right up until the last minutes of stoppage time when 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho ran free and made it 2-0 to the home team.

United move up on the same number of points as Newcastle, but a worse goal difference means a continued fourth place.

Just behind United in the table, Aston Villa made sure to take a leaden third at home to Tottenham who were beaten back 2-1.

For Chelsea, things continue to be difficult after only drawing 2-2 at home against bottom team Nottingham.

Elsewhere in London, Crystal Palace won 2-0 at home to Bournemouth.

Another bottom team, table jumbo Southampton, has had to pay for itself. After 0–2 against Fulham, it is clear that “Soton” will be relegated to the Championship next season.
