Fast-paced war action in the jungle: Tropic Thunder on TV

Director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) wants to make a gigantic war film that should seem really realistic. Therefore, production is quickly relocated to the jungle. But the dysfunctional cast of actors, played by Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Brandon T. Stiller is deliberately making fun of the now outdated Hollywood practices, which is why the blackfacing in Tropic Thunder not only sparked controversy, but also approval. Jamie Foxx again praised RDJ’s performance in 2022, saying he wanted the actor to portray a Mexican in his film (via IndieWire).

Ben Stiller also pointed out in a tweet in 2018: “Actually, Tropic Thunder was boycotted 10 years ago when it came out and I apologized at the time. It was always intended to make fun of actors who will do anything for awards to win.” (via RollingStone ) He has since withdrawn the apology and is still behind the satire. Ironically, it was RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a prize-hungry actor.

However, Tropic Thunder received significantly more criticism because of the portrayal of a film-within-a-film character with mental impairment and a related insult, which was used excessively in the media of the 00s. Affected groups drew attention to the painful insult back then and boycotted Tropic Thunder (via NPR). Nowadays, at least this scene would probably no longer make it into the film so easily.

The Hollywood satire is still worth seeing today and is extremely entertaining
